Opened in 2017, Leaning Silo Folk & Homestead School is committed to offering a place where you can relax, de-stress, and learn a new skill. Nestled in the middle of the rural beauty of Central Minnesota, small groups of people come together in our small schoolhouse. Classes are taught by people who are passionate about doing things a different way. We offer classes in living off the land, self sufficiency, and a variety of folk arts. So come out and visit our little schoolhouse, enjoy some food, have some fun learning old skills, and make some new friends that share the same interests.
The traditional folk school started in Scandinavia more than 100 years ago. Folk schools offer hands-on learning in a setting where one can learn just for the sake of learning. There are no grades and there are no tests. Traditional arts and crafts are typically the focus of the classes, often with a regional connection. At Leaning Silo Folk & Homestead School, we have also added the homesteading part of life. These classes focus on skills and activities that may be useful to a person as they set up their own hobby farm or help them gain a little more self sufficiency.
A unique feature of the school is that we have a fully licensed kitchen on site. Any class that is 4 hours or longer will include a hearty meal prepared in the Leaning Silo kitchen as part of the cost the class. We will be serving what we like to call "peasant food"- homemade soups, cheeses, breads, fruit, and of course, dessert.
Examples of classes that we offer include: ۰Make your own snowshoes ۰Spinning and dyeing wool ۰Soap making ۰Raising your own animals ۰Beekeeping ۰Prairie restoration ۰Foraging for food ۰Paper making ۰Candle making ۰Book making/repair ۰Solar Power ۰Wind Power ۰Cold weather greenhouses ۰Organic gardening ۰Start your own homestead ۰Preserving your harvest ۰Survival training ۰Woodworking ۰Metalworking ۰Leather working ۰Storytelling And many, many more!
